  • A House of Representatives committee has begun an investigation into Amazon’s labour standards in the wake of major weather catastrophes.
  • Six people died last winter when a tornado hit the company’s factory in Illinois. That is where most of the investigation is going to take place, though.
  • According to previous accounts, the presence of a tornado does not prohibit Amazon employees from working.

Investigating Amazon’s work practices in connection with severe weather disasters is now underway by a committee of the United States House of Representatives. A large portion of the inquiry is focused on the company’s facility in Illinois, which last winter claimed the lives of six individuals as a result of a tornado invasion.

Amazon will be scrutinised by the committee to see if there are any errors on their behalf. Amazon workers, according to prior reports, are not prevented from working because of the existence of a tornado. Even if a storm hit the area, an unnamed insider said, “They would be fired.” A tornado warning is not enough for delivery companies to recall drivers.

A total of six people were murdered when a tornado struck an Amazon warehouse, causing it to collapse. Over the next two weeks, the committee is apparently looking for Amazon papers and interactions. In order to comply, the corporation must provide evidence of its emergency preparation measures, exercises, and “any correspondence between management, workers, or contractors about employment obligations and the company records.” If bad weather happens, the company needs to know how it will respond. This is one of the most important documents they need.

Amazon’s internal assessment or investigation of the event, as well as any disciplinary action taken against workers and contractors in Illinois and abroad, are among the records requested by the House Ways and Means Committee.

The deadline for Amazon to submit the paperwork is April 14.

The New York Times, meanwhile, quotes a company representative as saying, “Our emphasis remains on assisting our workers and partners, grieving families, neighbouring communities, and everyone touched by the disaster.” In due time, we’ll report back to the committee.

Amazon employee deaths have been investigated by federal authorities before. OSHA began its own probe in December after receiving letters from two Congressional committees requesting an explanation. Requests for a response from the corporation were not immediately returned.
