  • Twitter has announced that Nigerian users can now use the tipping tool
  • Twitter has introduced pan-African payment systems Paga and Flutterwave as payment providers for its new feature in Nigeria.
  • Nigeria is not the only African country to support the feature at the moment as Ghana is also graced with the privilege

Twitter has announced that Nigerian users can now use the tipping tool. As an added benefit, Twitter has introduced pan-African payment systems Paga and Flutterwave as payment providers for its new feature, in addition to Bitcoin and Ethereum wallet addresses.

In September 2021, Twitter launched its tipping tool, which supports Bitcoin via the lightning network, as a way for users to pay money via cryptocurrency and other means on its social media platform. Although criticised, the feature is widely used in the country where it is supported.

The addition of new African-focused payment providers to Twitter’s Tips feature demonstrates the social media giant’s commitment to establishing access and bridging the divide between Africa and the rest of the globe. It also demonstrates the microblogging site’s willingness to offer chances to Africans, particularly now that it has established an office in Ghana.

What you should know is that Nigeria is not the only African country to support the feature at the moment. Ghana, as one might anticipate, is also included on the list. Outside of Africa, the corporation added India to the list, as well as Paytm, an Indian payment provider.

Flutterwave and Paga are both market leaders in Africa’s payment and financial services ecosystems. Flutterwave, in particular, will implement the tipping feature using its by-product, Barter. Barter is a web and mobile application that enables users to transfer and receive money from overseas immediately, securely, and at a reasonable cost.

Flutterwave also made headlines after raising $250 million in a funding round led by B Capital Group. Other investors included Alta Park Capital, Whale Rock Capital, and Lux Capital while existing investors included Glynn Capital, Avenir Growth, Tiger Global, Green Visor Capital, and Salesforce Ventures. The company’s valuation was increased to $3 billion as a result of this fundraising round.

According to Olugbenga Agboola, CEO and Founder of Flutterwave, commented on its addition, saying, “As a frequent Twitter user, creators, artists, and companies contribute enormous value to my experience on the platform—creating a mechanism to reward or tip them is a positive move by Twitter.”

”   As a result, we’re thrilled to be collaborating with them to develop a secure, fast, and easy option for users to tip these incredible authors via Barter by Flutterwave. We have the reach and capacity to enable African creators to receive tips from all around the world. I’m sure I’ll be one of the most avid users of Tips, simply because it’s an incredible tool with enormous potential for Africa’s creator economy. “

Paga Contribution

“Our objective at Paga is to simplify payments for individuals and businesses,” stated Tayo Oviosu, the company’s founder and CEO. Through this relationship with Twitter, we can establish an efficient method for creators to receive payment straight into their Paga accounts via Tips.

As an ardent Twitter user, I’m overjoyed by this collaboration. Creators are a critical demographic for Paga, and this relationship enables them to monetize their work successfully. We’re ecstatic about the prospect of handling payments in novel ways, particularly in collaboration with firms like Twitter.
