Nigerian FG Lifts Twitter Suspension

Seven months after suspending the microblogging service Twitter in Nigeria, the Federal Government has removed the suspension. Inuwa Abdullahi, Chairman, Technical Committee Nigeria-Twitter Engagement and Director-General, National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), announced in a statement.

The Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN) authorizes me to tell you that President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, has authorized the lifting of the suspension of Twitter operations in Nigeria, which will take effect at midnight tonight, January 13th, 2022.” The consent was provided in response to a note addressed to the President by the Honourable Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Prof. Isa Ali Ibrahim, according to the statement.

“In the Memo, the Minister updates and begs the President’s consent for the lifting based on the advice of the Technical Committee Nigeria-Twitter Engagement.”

Since then, the government and Twitter have been in talks about reinstating the service under a set of criteria, including Twitter registering operations in Nigeria.

According to him, Twitter has agreed to function in the country if certain conditions are met.

It went on to say that the federal government-created committee worked with the Twitter team to overcome the standoff and that the settlements would provide “endless possibilities.”

“As a result, our involvement will assist Twitter in improving and developing additional business models to reach a bigger region in Nigeria.” Furthermore, the FGN “looks forward to creating a suitable environment for Twitter and other global tech businesses to realize their potential and be sustainably profitable in Nigeria,” according to the statement.

In June, Nigeria suspended Twitter service after the company erased a statement by Buhari, sparking an international outcry about free expression.

Twitter did not reply quickly to a request for comment.

The United States, European Union, and Canada joined rights organizations in denouncing the ban as harmful to freedom of speech in Africa’s most populous country.

When Boko Haram kidnapped over 300 schoolgirls in 2014, Twitter played a significant role in Nigerian political discourse, with hashtags such as # BringBackOurGirls and # EndSARS during anti-police brutality rallies in 2020.
