Netflix Rolls Out Free streaming tier to Kenya

Netflix on Monday announced its going to launch a free mobile plan in Kenya to promote growth in the country. As the global streaming giant looks to tap the East African continent with a population of over i 20 million internet users.

According to Netflix, the free plan launching within the coming week will be available to all users in Kenya and it won’t require them to provide any form of autentication or payment information during the sign-up process.

Features of the New Netflix plan in Kenya

In addition, the new plan will be available to any user aged 18 and above utilizing an Android phone, that is the new free sign up will be strictly for android users and account can only be used on any android device excluding iPhone, iPad, tv or pc. Netflix concluded saying this account will also not include any form of ads.

Netflix, is a movie streaming client available in over 190 countries, and has experimented with a series of plans in recent years to lure viewers in developing markets. In the year 2018, the company began testing a $3 mobile-only plan in India right before expanding it to users in several other countries.

This is also not the first time the company is offering its service for free or at little to no price. In previous years Netflix has also supported free trials in many markets, as well as offered a tiny share of its original movies and shows to non-subscribers and has also run at least one campaign in India when the service was available at no charge over the course of a weekend.

Kenya is still remarkable. Netflix spokesperson told Reuters that it will be availing about one quarter of its movies and tv shows catalog to users in the free plan of the country.

“If you’ve never watched Netflix before — and many people in Kenya haven’t — this is a great way to experience our service,” Cathy Conk, director of Product Innovation at Netflix, wrote in a blog post.

“And if you like what you see, it’s easy to upgrade to one of our paid plans so you can enjoy our full catalog on your TV or laptop as well.”

We do not know how long Netflix is expecting to keep this offer of free tier in Kenya or if it is also delebrating on expanding it to other markets

Also, earlier this year, Amazon introduced a free and ad-supported video streaming service within its shopping app in India to lure more customers.
