Keynotes

  • According to the NCC, MTN is planning to provide 5G network services.
  • In December of last year, the NCC launched an auction for 3.5GHz spectrum, which MTN and Mafab Communications won.
  • The NCC has finally delivered letters of 5G licence award to MTN and Mafab Communications.
  • Because of health concerns, the Senate blocked the nationwide deployment of 5G in May of last year.
  • 5G was scheduled to be available in the United States by January, but it has already slipped four months behind schedule.

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has finally given letters of 5G licence awards to MTN and Mafab Communications, which won the Commission’s 3.5GHz spectrum auction in December last year, after almost five months of internal deliberations and ceremonial events. Dr. Ikechukwu Adinde, NCC’s Director of Public Affairs, said that Prof. Umar Garba Danbatta, the Commission’s Executive Vice Chairman (EVC), told the Board of Commissioners about this at the Board’s Special Meeting on Wednesday.

According to the auction’s information memorandum (IM), “the two licensees are now required to speed the implementation of a 5G network that would launch Nigeria into a more robust Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) and a more digitalized Nigerian economy,” says part of a statement.

However, Technext report funds were formally transferred to the commission by the federal government in February of this year. In addition to the spectrum assignment price paid by MTN, the two spectrum winners each paid $273.6 million for the 5G spectrum licence.

The final letters awarding 5G licences to MTN and Mafab have been sent by the NCC. For the fourth industrial revolution, 5G licences are an important issue. The Senate halted the rollout of 5G across the nation in May of last year due to health concerns. 5G was supposed to be accessible in the United States by January, but it has already fallen four months behind schedule.

According to a statement released by the commission, businesses are required to “commence the rollout of 5G services starting from August 24, 2022.” We should expect a slew of advantages and prospects when the 5G network is put into place, resulting in increased economic development and smart living in the nation. ” Improved connectivity, mobility, and capacity are projected to be a result of the new technology. “Low-latency capabilities” are also promised.

The commission hopes that putting Nigeria’s National Policy on 5G into action will speed up the implementation of national goals in its Nigerian National Broadband Plan (NNBP) 2020–2025, the National Digital Economy Policy and Strategy (NDEPS) 2020–2030, and other sectoral policies that aim to improve Nigeria’s digital transformation.

According to the Federal Communications Commission and other government officials, the 5G network will revolutionise our nation’s technology. Meanwhile, Prof. Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami, Nigeria’s Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, said in December 2017 that “we believe that if 5G is used successfully by our security institutions, it would go a long way in solving many security concerns we have in Nigeria.”

The 5G National Policy was launched in January by the president, who has lauded the growth of 5G in the nation. Although licensees have to meet their 5G network deployment schedule responsibilities, the NCC also says in its statement that the private sector and government must work together and help to change every part of the economy through the use of 5G.
