Nigerian No. 1 Popular Network MTN has announced to the general public as regards to the service outage experienced throughout the entire country on Saturday, 9th October 2021 saying that the outage was as a result of a disruption in its core network. MTN is one out of the four most used telecom service in the country holding about 71m telecom subscribers in Nigeria.
However, the unprecedented outage event which took place last week left all of the telecom subscribers unable to make/receive calls even to the point of been unable to access their data-connection services for about six hours.

MTN Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Olutokun Toriola in a statement explained that the networks technical team was able to rectify the problem for about 6 hours, he went further in apology to all it’s customers who were affected, while recapitulating the company’s profound devotion to providing dependable service.

What is the Telecom Core Network?
In telecoms, the core network or backbone network is a high capacity communication facility. It is the central element of any telecom company network that provides services to customers who are connected by the access network.
The affected core network is what enables subscribers who are subscribed to the telecoms company network to access voice and data services. The mobile core network also provides an essential function such as subscriber profile information, subscriber location and authentication of services.

Over the past decades, mobile core network has evolved to a great deal going from 2G, 3G to 4G to 5G in more advanced countries but the interference by problems arising in the core network have greatly affected them. The components used for a network core facilities are basically network and data link layer technologies as well as asynchronous transfer mode (ATM), IP, synchronous optical networking (SONET), and dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM).
