Keynotes

  • Instagram is testing a mechanism for building reels that makes use of current post types.
  • Currently, only a small number of people have access to the templates capability.
  • This new feature seems to be similar to TikTok’s own templates tool, which allows creators to insert their own films into a predetermined sequence.
  • Instagram has notified us that it is currently testing the capability with a small group of users

According to an insider story, Instagram is trying out a new tool, dubbed Templates, that would allow users to create reels by borrowing video styles from other Instagram videos (via TechCrunch). TikTok’s own templates tool, which lets producers place their own videos into a predefined sequence, looks to be somewhat comparable to this new function.

The Templates function was discovered by reverse engineer Alessandro Paluzzi in January, and marketing manager and influencer Josephine Media has already used it. According to a screenshot hill uploaded in March, users may be able to insert their own video into pre-set frames and add their own music.

This could save people from having to use third-party templates like Canva or carefully follow online instructions in order to get a certain format.

According to a Meta representative, “We’re continually working on new methods to make reels easier to construct.” We’re doing some tests in order to see whether you can use an existing template from another reel to create a new reel. As Instagram informed us, it is now testing the functionality with a select set of users.

Tests like this occur at a time when Instagram is working to increase the number of users that use Reels by addressing a major issue of users having to report TikTok videos as reels on Instagram. Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri recently revealed that the network will tighten its grip even further by devaluing reposts, a move that follows a similar announcement made last year. With the addition of templates, reels might be made simpler to use and encourage the development of new material.
