Keynotes

  • In a makeover of the streaming service, IMDb TV will be renamed “Amazon Freevee.”
  • Amazon Freevee has debuted to compete with Netflix and Hulu.
  • When Amazon’s streaming service, Prime Video, started in 2019 as “IMDb Freedive,” it had a stranglehold in the streaming fights.
  • The new name for IMDb TV, Amazon Freevee, emphasises the fact that the ad-supported service is free for users.
  • Despite Freevee’s efforts to grow original content by 70% this year, fans will have the last say on whether or not the platform is a success.

Amazon’s streaming service, Prime Video, had a stronghold in the streaming battles when it launched as “IMDb Freedive” in 2019. But IMDb TV swiftly sank into obscurity amid the fierce competition. Amazon has said that it plans to relaunch the streaming service under a new name and with a lot more content, even though the first redesign didn’t help the young platform and its content get attention.

IMDb TV, Amazon Freevee, the new moniker for IMDb TV, emphasises the fact that the ad-supported service is free for users. Meanwhile, in a press release outlining its vision for the service’s future, Freevee Director Ashraf Alkarmi described Freevee as a “supplemental platform” for users who want to watch “quality” series and films with fewer ad interruptions.

According to Alkarmi, Freevee was launched in response to the growing number of customers who choose to watch premium content through ad-supported streaming rather than conventional TV. The new name “accurately reflects who we are: a simple-to-browse streaming service accessible to consumers for free, anytime and whenever they want to view some of the finest original and licenced content available,” says the company in a statement.

With a mix of original material like Bosch: Legacy and an adaptation of Tegan and Sara’s High School book by Clea DuVall, Freevee hopes to differentiate itself from other streaming services that rely heavily on licenced content. Even though Freevee plans to increase its original content by 70% this year, viewers will have the final say on whether or not the platform is a success.

The third time may be the charm for Amazon Freevee, but at this point in the streaming game, a vast library isn’t always enough to guarantee success.
