Back-up codes make it simple to regain access to your Google account. They serve as the last line of defense for regaining access to your Google account if you have lost your phone, are unable to receive messages from Google, or are unable to obtain a code from the Google Authenticator app.

You can also use them if your security keys are lost. This allows you to recover your account without having to contact Google, which is a time-consuming process.

Here’s how to use Google to generate backup Authenticator codes.

How to Generate Google Authenticator Codes

Creating backup codes on Google is a fairly simple process. If you have 2-step verification enabled, use the following steps to generate backup codes:

  1. If you haven’t already, go to the My Account page and sign in to your Google account.
  2. On the left navigation panel, select Security.
  3. Select 2-Step Verification from the Signing in to Google drop-down menu. Google may prompt you for your password.
  4. Select Set Up under Back-up codes under the Add more second steps to verify it’s you section.
  5. Google will generate ten codes for you to use. Choose Download or Print and keep the codes in a safe place.

If you have not enabled 2-step verification, the procedure will be slightly different. To enable 2-Step verification and generate backup codes, follow these steps:

  1. Navigate to You may be required to log in to your account.
  2. Scroll all the way down to Signing in to Google. You must disable Use your phone to sign in if it is enabled.
  3. Then, choose 2-Step Verification. Google may request your password for verification. If it does, enter your password and press the Next button.
  4. Select Get Started.
  5. On the next page, click Continue.
  6. Select Use Another Back-up Option on the Add a Backup Option screen. If you are not using your device, Google will display a set of ten codes that you can use to sign in to your account.
  7. Choose Print or Download and keep the codes in a safe place.
  8. After that, click Next and then Turn On to finish configuring 2-Step verification.

Working with backup codes is convenient because you don’t have to carry your phone around with you for 2-step verification. You can easily run out of codes with a set of ten, and each code can only be used once.

Fortunately, you can generate new codes at any time by visiting the 2-step verification page in your Google account. You can also see the codes by going to My Account > Security > 2-Step Verification and clicking Show codes under Back-up codes.
