Keynotes

  • The Rings of Power’s season one finale revealed Halbrand’s actual identity.
  • Sauron leverages the elves’ fascination with rings to get them to help him manufacture his own ring.
  • Season 2’s Rings of Power chronology is open since he left Eregion before helping to develop the other 16.
  • Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power’s second season will cover Sauron’s efforts to rule Middle Earth with the One Ring.

For the duration of the episode, Halbrand has a major influence on Celebrimbor, the elf smith, teaching him how to use the elves’ mithril nugget to its full potential. Upon further investigation, Galadriel discovers that Halbrand is not the rightful monarch of the Southlands but rather Sauron in disguise. When the true nature of Sauron is known, he runs away, but the elves continue to work on the first three rings of power. These rings have the ability to control the will and thought processes of the bearer, making them very dangerous.

While it may seem contradictory for Sauron to help his adversaries gain power, his actions have been calculated. But his real goal is to use the elves’ devotion to the Rings as a means to conquer and control them. Even though he didn’t make the Three Rings himself, he had a role in their creation and so knew something about their nature and how they were made. Because of this, he may connect the three to his own One Ring when he forges it, which is a critical part of his strategy. Sauron views the ring’s power over elves as a way to rule over them, so he manipulates them by supporting them. Sauron uses the elves’ interest in the rings to his advantage as a way of causing them to help him create and make his own ring.

Just what is Sauron trying to accomplish, anyway?

To earn the elves’ confidence and eventually convince them to make the rings, Sauron pretended to be their king by claiming to rule over the Southlands. Actually, he always planned for the elves to forge the Three Rings without his assistance. While we did provide the directions for making the rings, it was crucial that they think they were the ones who came up with the idea.

When Sauron uses the One Ring to enslave them and enter their minds, he will be able to exert more influence over them covertly. If they believed that the idea to make the rings came from them and their leader instead of a foreign being, it would allow Sauron to enter their minds more easily than if he thought they were resisting him.

The Question Is How The Other Rings of Power Will be created.

All of the Rings of Power are made in a somewhat different sequence from what was seen in The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. In his fair form, Annatar is what Sauron is called in the texts, not Halbrand. Though he aids Celebrimbor in the creation of the other 16 Rings of Power, he is not personally involved in the creation of the three (similar to the show).

TLOTR: The Rings OF Power

Since he abandoned Eregion before helping to create the other 16 Rings of Power, Season 2’s timeline for their creation remains wide open. It is shown that Sauron forges the One Ring before Celebrimbor completes the Rings of Power (in fact, Sauron forged it without his knowledge or consent) and that its creation was completed with some assistance from the Elven smiths.

Once the elves have collected all 19 rings, Sauron declares war on them in the books. This is how he gets back the 16 smaller rings, 7 of which he gives to the dwarves and 9 to the humans. As a result of the shift in the forging process, the elves may now give the other Rings of Power they create as gifts to their allies. Though he goes by many names, Sauron’s ultimate goal is to build the One Ring and use it to dominate the other Rings of Power.
