Keynotes

  • Google Meet users on the Web can now more clearly distinguish between background effects and foreground effects.
  • The company also states that the software will offer real-time video effects processing in the cloud.
  • inline with Google, there is an increased impact in quality while preserving battery life and up to 30% of CPU power.

Google Meet has received some updates, including improved background affect quality and performance. According to Google, after the updates, the background effects are more accurate, with improved background and foreground separation for Google Meet users on the Web.

Furthermore, the company claims that the app will support cloud processing of real-time video effects. According to Google, this will help save battery and CPU power on the device “while optimizing affect quality.”

Google announced in a blog post that Google Meet for the Web will now have improved background effects and performance, as well as improved background and foreground separation.

The goal is to reduce choppy backgrounds that were washed off during a movement or were not looking up to the mark. Background effects are used to hide dirty areas from where the meeting is being held, to limit distractions, and/or to make video calls more enjoyable.

Google has also announced the release of a new feature that will assist users who have devices that were not designed to run real-time video effects. People who own such machines can benefit from cloud processing assistance.

The effects can now be processed in the cloud, allowing less powerful machines to make the best use of background effects. “Meet automatically adjusts between device-based and cloud-based effect processing to provide the best possible experience,” according to Google. It is claimed to save battery life and up to 30% of CPU power while improving affect quality.

Background blur and light adjustment will be the first effects to support cloud-based processing, according to Google. Additional effects, such as background replacement, will be supported in the future. Furthermore, there will be no admin control or end-user configuration for this feature.

In terms of availability, improved background and foreground separation are now available to all Google Meet users on eligible devices. Google Workspace Business Standard, Business Plus, Enterprise Standard, Enterprise Plus, and Workspace Individual customers on eligible devices in eligible countries can use the cloud-based processing feature.

Google Workspace Essentials, Business Starter, Enterprise Essentials, Education Fundamentals, Education Plus, Frontline, Nonprofits, legacy G Suite Basic and Business customers, and users with personal Google Accounts are not eligible.
