Paul Atreides is introduced in a new light in Denis Villeneuve’s first Dune film, although the film is cautious to keep many facts and characters from Frank Herbert’s original novel under wraps. Before the latest casting news for the second Dune movie came out, it was clear that Villeneuve had something up his sleeve that would surprise the audience. According to Deadline, Christopher Walken will play the Padishah Emperor Shaddam IV, the man responsible for bringing Paul Atreides’ father Leto to Arrakis in the first place. Meanwhile, a failed attack by House Atreides on House Harkonnen leaves the emperor and House Harkonnen in disbelief on Arrakis, where the Fremen have risen up in rebellion.
Since Dune: Part II is designed to cover aspects of the book the previous film didn’t, the emperor won’t be the only interesting new character. However, when Dune: Part II opens in theatres on October 20th, 2023, he’ll be a major player. Until then, sit tight and avail yourselves of the wide variety of exclusive TV shows and movies of 2022.
