Keynotes

  • The latest iOS 16 beta adds a new “Sleep” state to iOS 16’s default wallpapers.
  • The new “Sleep” option is a darker and more colourful variation of the wallpaper that works well on an always-on display.
  • On the iPhone 14 Pro, Apple looks to be mimicking the behaviour found on the Apple Watch.

A new feature discovered in the iOS 16 beta might be the latest proof that Apple intends to include always-on display technology in future high-end iPhones.

According to a report from 9to5Mac, the latest iOS 16 beta introduces a new “Sleep” state to the default wallpapers in iOS 16. The new “Sleep” option is a darker and more colourful version of the wallpaper that is better suited to being exhibited on an always-on display. In a nutshell, the new “Sleep” state may be thought of as a picture filter that can be applied to any image that the user chooses to use for their always-on display.

Apple appears to replicate the behaviour seen on the Apple Watch on the iPhone 14 Pro. Though the Apple Watch Series 5 and later with an always-on display show a darker and more dim version of the watch face until the wrist is raised, the iPhone 14 Pro may show a darker version of the wallpaper until the user turns it on.

Users will see remnants of their wallpaper and information, such as the clock and lock screen widgets, even when their display is not in active use with the new “Sleep” state.

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, an always-on display integrated into the iOS 16 Lock Screen will be available exclusively for higher-end iPhone 14 models.

The iPhone 14 Pro will be able to have an always-on display owing to more sophisticated panels with refresh rates as low as 1Hz. ProMotion technology is used in the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max, and it can go as high as 120Hz and as low as 10Hz. The reduced 1Hz refresh rate of the iPhone 14 Pro series, compared to the iPhone 13 Pro, will enhance energy efficiency with an always-on display.

An always-on display is one of many major improvements expected for the iPhone 14 Pro series, which also includes a pill-shaped and hole-punch cutout in place of the notch, a 48MP rear camera, quicker performance, new colours, and more.
